Electric jeepneys led the recent launching and inauguration of the Zapote River Drive, a new alternate route from Las Piñas to Cavite, the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) said.

The new three-kilometer road starts from Lundos and Pamplona I and transverses the Zapote River Drive. Motorists and commuters thus avoid the perennial heavy traffic along Zapote Road.

John Solis, general manager of MetroExpress Connect Inc., an EVAP member, said that their company is working to introduce more eco-friendly electric vehicles for their transport services because they would like to contribute their share to protecting and preserving the environment.

“In fact, our commitment does not start and end in Las Piñas alone. We will be introducing within this month two more e-jeepneys in our Iloilo operations,” he said.

“We are happy that Las Piñas is very aggressive in promoting green transport. The extensive use of e-jeepneys as an environment-friendly alternative to traditional diesel-fueled PUJs [public utility jeepneys] is a testament to this commitment. We just hope more LGUs [local government units] will follow suit,” said EVAP president Rommel Juan.

Senators Cynthia Villar and Loren Legarda, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials, and local government heads attended the event.
